Monster Hunter and U

3/26/2013 1:42 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
When Monster Hunter was announced a year ago, I was excited for this game, since I understand how to play Monster Hunter and I know people who also finally understand how to play Monster Hunter on a good level. Working as a group can be really fun! I've been looking forward to another opportunity to play this on a big screen and relieve my hands of several years of cramping and give my eyes a break from squinting.

However, I watched a stream of this game on its release day and several days after, and it seemed all too familiar to the Wii version, Tri. It sort of makes sense. They are the same series, but you can never be sure with Capcom games whether it's a "Turbo" or a "Gaiden".

Maybe people outside of my circle, in videogameland at large, were clamoring for this, but it makes no sense (to me) to port a 2010 game in 2013. Why is this the game Capcom decides to push in the US?

This isn't totally Capcom's problem, but the Wii U and 3DS might as well be ...

FreeSuper sits quietly in the dark

A couple days ago I went to see a movie that clearly markets itself to me. It's called Wreck-It-Ralph. While it wasn't my favorite recent Disney movie, I found it to be a perfectly adequate movie that has videogames at the center. Extra thoughts about the film:

Wreck-it-Ralph felt like it ran out of videogame jokes about a third of the way through the movie and switched over to food jokes for the rest. I wonder if parts of the movie were recycled from a script for a film about the board game Candy Land? Speaking of jokes, early on in the film there was a violent gag involving Kano that made the parents in the audience wince. Considering how the rest of the movie goes, it really seemed out of place in context. However, it does hold the distinction of being the only evisceration joke I've seen in a Disney cartoon.

Between Wreck-It Ralph, Up, Shrek, and Monsters Inc. it seems a lot of animated films are about lumpy old guys who complain about their day jobs....

Yata!

8/22/2012 3:09 pm - FreeSuper comments
There are probably only three of you that will know what I'm talking about, but...

It looks like the upstanding dude at Nicalis has picked up "Yata," aka Yatagarasu, the cool doujin 3S clone, for a Western release. http://vimeo.com/47897199

You may remember Nicalis as the company that released a variety of hella-buggy ports of Cave Story on various platforms which included fan mods to the freeware version as "bonus features" without permission, and the company that jerked the La Mulana developers around for months about how the process of getting approved for WiiWare in the US was not proceeding. Update: aug 23 - Dang nabbit. This version of the game is a stinking 3DS port. The trailer was also a sloppily thrown together video of the PC version running in a 3DS frame! It's not even an accurate trailer!

E3 2012 - I am Technically Having Fun

6/5/2012 7:48 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
E3 this year was a total sham, If it was not for an official announcement of this game I have been following for the past 4 years coming to the US, I would consider giving up videogaming.

This should have been part of their keynote address and not quietly slid under the door!

Behold! My personal selection for GOTY of 20XX! I would even say that Sony should just replace PSHome with this fantastic masterpiece! Tokyo (fuggin') Jungle!

Anatomy of Hype

6/1/2012 3:25 pm - FreeSuper comments
About a year ago, Patrick Miller posted an excellent story talking of his time with fighting games, the excitement of watching and playing these games in a tournament setting, and why every fighting fan should go to EVO when it comes back to the spotlight this July. It reminisces some of the good times of EVO 2011 and touches on what first-time visitors can expect once touching down in Las Vegas. If you have a few minutes, pour a cup of coffee and give this article some of your time. It's a great perspective on the scene and why we care about this event so dearly when it summertime arrives every year.

Final Round: Underappreciated Greatness

3/5/2012 11:11 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
Kusoru! I was not familiar with what this man had done in the past in this scene, but when a man has the tenacity to travel from Japan all the way to Atlanta, GA to play videogames. I can't help but cheer for the man! It also helped that his name translates to "Sh*t Sol". This is a man who instantly called for my attention!

A friend told me that his usual moniker is Ahegao Joe and despite a strong showing here, he's the weakest of the 5 kusoge gods. It's like Fist of the North Star except instead of using different ways of killing dudes, they have different styles of elegantly trolling people at fighting games. This is a group of players, I can love! However, one of the most unappreciated moments in the recent FINAL ROUND tournament was this set from an oft-heard of, but not played game (in the US) called Gulty Gear. In what is one of the most hilarious sets I have had the pleasure in watching is starring Kusoru's Sol. Living up to his moniker this man performed the most ...

SFxT: Save Scumming our Bank Accounts

3/5/2012 10:47 am - FreeSuper comments
As an old salty man in the world of videogames. I've had slight suspicion when on the debut of this Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom began heavily promoting the PS3 version of the game with near no attention being paid to the x360. Capcom is so sleazy it is nothing less than genius, this statement is right from their own blog.

Fortunately (or not so), Capcom has finally confirmed that all the DLC content that we will be paying for in the future is already on the retail disc! On top of it all Sony awarded Capcom an enormous MoneyHat in order to make their systems have exclusivity of the extra DOZEN characters locked away exclusively for their Vita platform. Do know that the Sony Vita is a handheld game system that no respectable player is able to use for competitve play. For the next six months, a full quarter of the cast is locked way with no way to access them through not-so nefarious means. The gimmick behind the Vita exclusivity is that if you buy the Vita version, they al...

The Crass Assault Show

2/28/2012 6:54 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
Giant Bomb has a pretty good summary of the debacle that is happening in regards to this Cross Assault reality show that is supposed to showcase both Capcom's new fighting game and the spirit of the community surrounding it.

It's a total quagmire.

It's also really disturbing how much Capcom waited to act upon learning of the happenings of the reality show they are sponsoring.
For those that want to see some of the highlights regarding what led up to the incident there is a link to a video at the end of this article. Keep in mind that the video only highlights Day One.

When I was in community college, we got a talk from an assistant director on a bunch of reality shows regarding the production of them and how they manage everything. One of the least mentioned facts about their production is that they have a veritable army of behind the scenes people for contestant welfare. Reality shows can really screw with peoples' minds. Tempers flare and ...
