We aren't alone in being game enthusiasts!

6/18/2012 12:20 pm - FreeSuper comments
I have now lived in Cleveland, Ohio for several years and every year since about 2008, I constantly kept forgetting to attend an event hosted by one of the few independent gaming retailers in the county with an actual physical store for all of us to visit called the Video Game Connection. But not this year! This hosted event is called the Cleveland Classic Console and Arcade Gaming Show or CCAG for short and is being held this Saturday June 23. Only one day prior to our very own tournament of the Fox and Hound on June 24. Turn a sweaty and boring weekend into a weekend festival of gaming! Old and new! Fighting and friends or even fighting your friends!

The address of this event is at 22001 Brookpark Rd 44126. Click here for a google map!

Here's the list of events going on for us more competative minded folk!

Tournament Games:

XBOX 360 - Soul Calibur V
Arcade - Robotron - Top Score
Super Nintendo - ...

Monday Night Money Party - 50 Turns! For Men Only!

6/12/2012 1:08 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
For anyone not familiar with Console Combat and our monthly tournaments, we also do a smaller less serious stream. It is conveniently located on our tab bar. This is the weekly stream where our local crew comes together and trains up in the grand buffet of fighting games that are available out there in videogameland. Last night on June 11, however, we took things on a slightly different direction.

In the RED corner we have our Challenger. Mad jive-talker, bullseye rock tosser, and newfound fitness guru, Butch "One-Punch" Hankus.

In the BLUE corner we have our defending Champion. A silent but powerful striker, he will take out your legs and crush your head at a moment's notice. John "Mr. Sakazaki" Golden!

What ensued was FOUR HOURS of the most intense and riveting Mario Party 3 bouts that anyone has witnessed in over a decade of this game's existence. Many coins were shaken down from the combatants and ma...

Anatomy of Hype

6/1/2012 3:25 pm - FreeSuper comments
About a year ago, Patrick Miller posted an excellent story talking of his time with fighting games, the excitement of watching and playing these games in a tournament setting, and why every fighting fan should go to EVO when it comes back to the spotlight this July. It reminisces some of the good times of EVO 2011 and touches on what first-time visitors can expect once touching down in Las Vegas. If you have a few minutes, pour a cup of coffee and give this article some of your time. It's a great perspective on the scene and why we care about this event so dearly when it summertime arrives every year.

SFxT: Save Scumming our Bank Accounts

3/5/2012 10:47 am - FreeSuper comments
As an old salty man in the world of videogames. I've had slight suspicion when on the debut of this Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom began heavily promoting the PS3 version of the game with near no attention being paid to the x360. Capcom is so sleazy it is nothing less than genius, this statement is right from their own blog.

Fortunately (or not so), Capcom has finally confirmed that all the DLC content that we will be paying for in the future is already on the retail disc! On top of it all Sony awarded Capcom an enormous MoneyHat in order to make their systems have exclusivity of the extra DOZEN characters locked away exclusively for their Vita platform. Do know that the Sony Vita is a handheld game system that no respectable player is able to use for competitve play. For the next six months, a full quarter of the cast is locked way with no way to access them through not-so nefarious means. The gimmick behind the Vita exclusivity is that if you buy the Vita version, they al...

The Crass Assault Show

2/28/2012 6:54 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
Giant Bomb has a pretty good summary of the debacle that is happening in regards to this Cross Assault reality show that is supposed to showcase both Capcom's new fighting game and the spirit of the community surrounding it.

It's a total quagmire.

It's also really disturbing how much Capcom waited to act upon learning of the happenings of the reality show they are sponsoring.
For those that want to see some of the highlights regarding what led up to the incident there is a link to a video at the end of this article. Keep in mind that the video only highlights Day One.

When I was in community college, we got a talk from an assistant director on a bunch of reality shows regarding the production of them and how they manage everything. One of the least mentioned facts about their production is that they have a veritable army of behind the scenes people for contestant welfare. Reality shows can really screw with peoples' minds. Tempers flare and ...

On this Day in Fighting History

12/15/2011 1:22 pm - FreeSuper1 comments
Takashi Nishiyama spent a not insignificant amount of his career basically creating SNK's fighting game repertoire, but this article on 1up also has a lot of classic Capcom information as well. There was a lot of information there that I was ashamed not to know. This has erased some of my shame for the day and I found this article absolutely fascinating!!
Nishiyama has been in this job for so long and has been so silent that this piece filled in a lot of missing pieces about the history of the fighting genre from both Capcom and SNK.

But (for me) every answer it provided created another question. For instance, Nishiyama notes that when SNK was bought out by UEC there were over 600 people in development alone. Mistranlation? What could SNK be doing at the time that needed 600 people? The NeoGeo Pocket?

Nishiyama also mentions future Dimps IP, I fancy the idea of an SNK vs Dimps in the future, whichever form it may take (no idea which genres they're going f...
